The Pride
of the City The Kölner Dom’s mighty towers dominate Cologne’s
skyline.
We will
introduce you to the long construction history of the
cathedral, and will let you in on the mysterious
explanation for why work on the Kölner Dom will never
end – at least, according to the legend.
Colonia – a
Roman City Cologne has been in existence for more than two
millennia. It was established as a settlement in the
first century BC when the Romans sailed up the Rhine
river.
You will learn about the empress who helped “Colonia”
achieve the status of a Roman city and about the
scandals that came in her wake.
The Old
Landmark Long before the cornerstone for the Kölner Dom was
laid, the huge Romanesque church,
Gross St. Martin, was the dominant landmark of the city.
Its five towers are an integral part of the Cologne
skyline.
You’ll hear the shaky story
of the corner towers, and will learn about the Roman
ruins that lie beneath the church.
Politics,
Kölsch and Carnival The “Alter Markt” or “old marketplace” is always
full of life.
You’ll learn
about Cologne’s democratic traditions as well as other
ancient customs, find out about Jan van Werth, and
you’ll get a crash course in how not to order more beers
than you want at Cologne’s traditional brewery houses.
Italy’s
Northern-Most City
Summer is the high season for Cologne’s Fischmarkt. The
panoramic view of the old town from here is
incomparable. We’ll tell you why this area has been one
of the city’s busiest since the Middle Ages, and about
the clever tricks of the merchant class that turned
Cologne into a major center of trade.
A Mask for
the Archbishop
Why is there a horribly grimacing mask on the wall of
this building? Cologne natives love to tell stories, and
this particular decoration has several tales associated
with it.
The stories have one thing in common – they all
somehow revolve around an Archbishop named Anno.
A Place
Full of History
A great deal has happened on Rathausplatz.
We’ll tell
you the story of the mayor who had to defend himself
against a hungry lion – as well as a dark chapter in
Cologne’s history that left
its traces here.
And finally, let your senses be seduced
by the scent that was born here.
